Sustainable Forestry and Agriculture

Schloss Wissen is the perfect retreat for all who are looking for peace and recreation in an unspoilt environment. Many guests make use of the meadows and forests surrounding of the castle for extensive walks and cycling tours. Schloss Wissen utilises the associated castle enterprises for sustainable forestry and agriculture so as to secure the manifold outputs of the forest – be it as a utility-, protection- or recreational function – for the future.

Apart from two agricultural enterprises and Schloss Wissen forestry, the biogas plant not only produces valuable fertiliser for the fields, it also provides heating and electricity for the buildings belonging to the castle, the conference and event rooms as well as apartments and hotel rooms. The Wissen properties, surrounding the castle and which are found on the territories of the Weeze municipality and the city of Kevelaer are, moreover, rented or leased out in the form of plots, apartments, office- and storage space.

Agriculture

The agricultural enterprises of the Wissen and Barby sites cover the agricultural sector of Schloss Wissen.

Food products are cultivated in the farming operation for the fresh food market and the canning industry.

Forestry

With the most modern forestry technology, the forestry enterprise of Schloss Wissen in particular dedicates itself to the creation and maintenance of bio diverse mixed forests and the natural rejuvenation thereof.

An exceptional highlight is the annual felling of Christmas trees on three respective weekends in Advent.

Biogas Plant

In 2003 the Biogas plant was one of a few which, apart from the agricultural operation, disposed of an ingenious heating concept.

In the meantime, the Biogas Plant not only delivers electricity to nearly 2100 single family homes but also supplies the castle premises and local buildings with natural bio heat.

Properties

Schloss Wissen disposes of a number of properties in the surroundings of the castle complex, for example, left-over farms and plots in the Weeze municipality and the city of Kevelaer.

The buildings, in part listed under monumental protection, today stand for highly attractive rural living and working in the midst of the landscape so typical of the Lower Rhine.
